Ciliate in a marine sample! It is a single-celled organism whose movements are unlike anything I’ve seen before. Like all ciliates, it uses hairlike structures called cilia to move around. The guess is that it is from the family Trachelocercidae. I came across this organism after collecting a sample of lake water from a pond in the mountains. If anyone can identify the species, I’d be extremely grateful. I believe it falls under the genus Zoothamnium or Carchesium. I was able to narrow it down via three characteristics: bell shape, stalk muscle fiber presence, and contracile mobility. In addition, this ciliate appears to be planktonic and free floating, rather than sessile. Even more strange is that the organism seems to swim stalk first
