Medieval medicine could be as terrifying as the diseases it tried to cure. Doctors relied on strange and often dangerous treatments: drilling holes in the skull (trepanation) to release ‘evil spirits,’ prescribing leeches to ‘balance the humors,’ or using ground-up herbs, charms, and even animal parts as remedies.
